Vapaa — Finnish for “free” — is a collective-improvisation project from the same circle of Finnish experimental musicians the Ikuisuus catalogue documents. Its recordings lean on collective, in-the-moment playing rather than composition, in keeping with the label’s free-music leanings.
The project is one of the acts the label released directly: a self-titled Vapaa CD-R appeared on Ikuisuus, drawn from a live performance in Tampere, while a companion set, Live In Faces, came out on the OMSHA sub-line in a still smaller edition. Both were issued in the tiny hand-assembled runs typical of the label — the kind of release made to document a moment rather than to sell.
