Ikuisuus was a small Finnish experimental music label and mail-order distro based in Tampere. Its name is the Finnish word for “eternity,” and for the better part of a decade it served as a home for strange, resolutely non-commercial sound — the free-folk, drone, psychedelia and free improvisation that circulated at the edges of the country’s underground. As a Finnish experimental music label, Ikuisuus never chased an audience beyond the few already listening; it simply documented a scene, one hand-assembled edition at a time.

An independent record label and distro

Ikuisuus worked as both a record label and a distro. On the label side it issued its own releases under two running prefixes — IKU for the house imprint and OM for the OMSHA sub-line closely tied to Jani Hirvonen’s Uton project. On the distro side it stocked kindred releases from a network of like-minded labels, so a single mail order could gather records from across the international underground. As a record label it gave the distro its identity, and the distro carried the label’s own work out into the world.

Almost everything moved in tiny quantities. Most Ikuisuus releases appeared on CD-R or cassette in runs of a few dozen to a hundred copies, many numbered by hand; a smaller number reached vinyl or pressed CD. The economics were plainly non-commercial — objects made to exist, not to sell in volume — and that scarcity is now part of the catalogue’s character.

At the centre of the Ikuisuus discography stands Uton, the long-running solo project of Jani Hirvonen, whose drifting, transcendental drone defines the label’s sound more than any other name.
