Uton — the Finnish experimental drone project, discography & albums

Uton is the solo project of Jani Hirvonen, the musician at the centre of the Ikuisuus label and its OMSHA sub-line, and the most prolific Finnish experimental voice in its catalogue. More than any other name, Uton defines the label’s sound: layered, hand-made, transcendental music assembled from guitar, cheap electronics, tapes and field recordings, drifting between free-folk, drone and outright psychedelia.

A Finnish experimental drone project

Hirvonen began recording as Uton in Tampere around 2001 — the same city and moment that produced Fonal and much of the wider scene — and later worked from Turku. The project became one of the most prolific in the Finnish experimental underground, running to well over a hundred releases across a decade. The debut, Taivaan Joka Kolossa (“In Every Corner of the Sky”), first appeared on Clay Records in 2001 and was later carried in the OMSHA catalogue as OM-10. From there Uton issued a long run of albums, CD-R editions and cassettes in the same Finnish experimental idiom.

Method and materials

The Uton method favours accretion over composition. Tracks build from looped and layered sound — drones stacked until they thicken, guitar figures repeated until they dissolve, tape hiss and room noise left in rather than cleaned away. The result reads as ritual rather than song: patient, textural, closer to a state than a structure. A stretch of field recording in India in 2007 fed directly into that palette, adding location sound to the records that followed — the three-disc Violin Massage among them.

Aliases and collaborations

Hirvonen has also recorded under related names — Dio Daga, Yksi (a harsher, noise-leaning project begun around 2006) and Aan among them — and in the trio Mutantea alongside Kulkija and the Argentine experimentalist Anla Courtis, formerly of Reynols. The OMSHA sub-line, with its own OM catalogue numbers, functioned in practice as the main channel for this body of work.

The Uton discography: albums and reissues

The Uton discography runs to dozens of titles, most of them small hand-numbered CD-R editions — among them Violin Massage (a three-disc set, OM-01), the double CD-R Radio Olio Metaphysica! in an edition of a hundred, Shiva Blues, Solar Spells and Holy Burn. Some of these albums were picked up for wider release abroad: the British label Reverb Worship reissued Shiva Blues in 2009, and Pearls And Dust appeared on Taped Sounds in 2008.

Beyond the Ikuisuus catalogue

Uton’s reach extended far past a single label. Over the years the project released through a string of underground imprints across several countries — among them Last Visible Dog and Digitalis in the United States, PseudoArcana in New Zealand, Sloow Tapes in Belgium and Dekorder in Germany. Those outside albums sit beyond the Ikuisuus catalogue proper, but they trace how far this Finnish experimental project’s reputation travelled from a small operation in Tampere.
